Vermont law does not recognize unborn babies as persons, so crimes against them cannot be charged separately from assaults on the pregnant woman. Legislation to create a "Crimes Against an Unborn Child" law was introduced in the 2025-2026 session but was not considered, with plans to reintroduce it in 2027.
